The song is associated with the Repeal of Prohibition, the heyday of cocktail culture, when movie stars, celebrities, the wealthy, showgirls and aristocrats all gathered at Sherman Billingsley's Stork Club in the New York City of the 1940s. Some of the famous who frequented the New York club over the years were Lucille Ball, Bing Crosby, the Kennedys, Frank Sinatra, Ernest Hemingway, Bette Davis, Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe, and many others. When it came to sipping, the Stork Club was a shrine of sophistication in the service of liquor. Bartenders knew instinctively that serving mammoth portions from birdbath-sized cocktail glasses would cause patrons to lose their balance in more ways than one. Oversized "Martini" glasses with their long stems and wide, conical bowls, were top-heavy and prone to tipping and sloshing over when full. The Stork Club mixologists used glasses with a lower center of gravity, ensuring that they were a lot less likely to get "tipsy," and that they were a whole lot more comfortable to hold. Small glasses aren't just practical for classic recipes, they're also stylistically appropriate. Over the years, cocktail glasses have grown supersized, ballooning from the modest 4- to 6-ouncers that were standard in 1930s to the imposing 8- to 10-ouncers so ubiquitous today.
